      • I’m curious what kind of planning went into the shot — did you figure out the astronomy of where and when you could see the rising blue moon and the dipper? And how long was your exposure? Beautiful results!

      • A bit of planning went into the shot, but as with anything a little luck came into play. I had been watching the moon rise for the last few days and with an extended clear spell I decided to take advantage of the timeliness of the blue moon on New Year’s Eve. The shot is actually 5 photos digitally stitched together to form the panorama. I could have shot the whole scene in one photograph, but the resulting crop would have been too small to reproduce at the quality/size I was trying to achieve. I’ve seen many iterations of the downtown moon shot done over the years by Art Sutch, Mark Kelley, etc… I wanted to do something a little different. The Big Dipper just happened to be in the right location to balance the image, otherwise I would have gone for a much tighter photo of town and mountains. A little serendipity can go a long ways. I hope you had a good New Year’s and that you’re enjoying the new job.
